TRANSIENT HABITATION

Once we identified the problems that exist in the kind of accommodation that is provided to the migrant workers, we as a group of designers started to look for ways to address the issues in a sensitive manner, and creating new kinds of habitats for the construction workers.

The comfort of the people and the transience of the system being the main priorities, many other factors were kept in mind while designing the habitation.

·       Systems should be cost effective

·       Materials used should be reconfigurable

·       Eco-friendly materials

·       Easy provision of services

·       Easy installation on site

·       Scalability

·       Disaster resistance

among many others.

Since the aim was to create a "system" complete in itself which can be applied in various situations, the process was divided into various stages, starting from innovating our own construction system to applying it on an actual site.

LIVING UNITS

Designing different types of units, making sure they are sufficient, efficient and comfortable.

CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM

Keeping in mind the cost, reconfigurabilty and ease of installation

CLUSTER TYPES

Designing various configuration of the units, and starting to define larger community spaces.

CLUSTER VARIATIONS ON SITE

Organising the clusters to form settlements, complete with all services, community spaces, and other utilities.

In a village like Ranipura, where the sense of community is so strong and people are gifted with the knowledge of the methods of construction, migration to city for construction work is a common practice. The semester final project focused on creating a vision for Ranipura that would help empower them, give them a strong sense of belief by creating more opportunities for work, enhancing their skills, but also to raise self-awareness by harnessing the issues they face.

The vision led to the formation of three major facilities that would help the village and its people to progress in the manner they thought was only possible in the city.

A construction material based system of building units, clusters and eventually habitation for the labour workers. The basic concept is to enable workers to make their own houses with a basic unit framework. The strength of the design being its materials as they provide a stable structure, thermal insulation and a feeling of familiarity. The other intersting thing about it being the play of heights in order to create community spaces, half levels etc.
