Interacting with the people working on some construction sites in Delhi, we came across a community of workers migrating from the Tikamgarh Tehsil in Madhya Pradesh. This area, with its rocky topography, many lakes and settlements became the focus area of our study. Arriving in Tikamgarh, we identified various villages in the district, all set near a water body. The above map shows the different villages that we explored. Set within the same district, these villages show varied morphologies and stages of urbanisation which gives each of them distinctive characters.

  • Mohangarh, nestled between the lake and the fort

  • Acharra,

  • Kumedhi,

  • Shankargarh,

  • Jankhi

After studying the social and physical environments of these villages, we studied another village in this district, called Ranipura in much greater depth. The physicality of the dwellings, traditional way of life, activity patterns of the people and how space is inhabited was the main focus of the study along with the various morphological elements in the settlement, the streets, the nodes, the market and other community spaces.
