Our studio aims at mapping the parallel lives of such migration workers. The village setting, their vernacular architecture, lifestyle, sense of living, community and culture. Here is where we investigate the reasons that facilitate migration to cities. Analysing the various aspects that affect them and drawing relations with the migration story.
The city, the transition from home to camps, hope for better living and the adjustment to a new setting, the part 2 of the migration story focuses on the changes in living and usage of space. Architecture wise there is a gravitation towards the kind of transient living that is created due to migration.
Shankargarh
शंकरगढ़
A small community of fishermen stay in shankargarh. Besides fishing they also hunt and grow crops for a living. Most of the houses her eare small and people usually hang out in their community spaces. Many of the houses in this village are locked. People migrate to places like Gujarat, Delhi, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Etc in search of jobs. People build their homes themselves using materials available in and around the place. The temperature inside the houses is relatively low due to mud plastering. The people consider a tree with a platform under it to be sacred.
Jhankhi
झाँखी
Jhankhi is a small settlement ahead of Shankargarh. It has a famous temple for lord shiva. All the villagers cook food and have lunch here on special occasions. Similar to Shankargarh, there are a lot of community spaces. This village has a school, and a good electricity system. The people of Jhankhi go to Acharra, a nearby village for market purposes.
